Post-Nexus 2002 Excursion

One of the traditions of the Nexus conferences on architecture and mathematics is a post-conference excursion to visit sites of exceptional architectural and mathematical value near the conference venue. In 1996 a workshop tour led by Donald and Carol Watts studied the houses in Pompei; in 1998, Stephen R. Wassell led a tour of Palladian villas; in 2000, Tim Brown led a tour of the architecture of Carlo Scarpa and the churches of Palladio in Venice.

The post-conference excursion planned for this year is an afternoon visit to two sites of extraordinary beauty near Obidos. The Cistercian Monastery of Alcobaça was founded in 1153. Its austere architecture is enriched by a fine cloister and several auxiliary rooms. The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória in the town of Batalha was built 1386-ca. 1517. It is an incredible structure of Gothic architecture. The octagonal Unfinished Chapel, constructed from 1448 to 1477, must be seen to be fully appreciated.
